Foreign Lands

Isn’t everyone a foreigner
crossing through a foreign land
trying to get their bearings
while trudging through the sand

Isn’t everyone a stranger
to the people that they meet
reaching for connection
with head or heart or feet

Isn’t everyone just wishing
for a spark of commonality
say I’m not invisible
that you’re not afraid of me

Isn’t it the envelope
that I’m packaged in
signalling my virtues
and blaming me for sin

Isn’t it against the odds
but convince you now I must
looking for compassion
searching for the just

Isn’t everyone a foreigner
crossing through a foreign land
destination vast unknown
until we join our hands
